Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in DIY, interior and lifestyle. Hope you have a nice stay!

Storage box Ikea hack

Storage box Ikea hack

I've got quite a lot of Ikea Knagglig storage crates in my house. I love their simple design and the boxes are great to store all kinds of things in. I use them to keep my magazine collection looking tidy in my bookcase, they house all our board games, I have some in the workshop with off cuts of wood and I even turned one into a dog basket. I was looking at a crate in my bookcase the other day and thought wouldn't it make a good toy storage basket if I  replace some of the slats with elastic? Have a look how I got on.

I love how the crate looks with the green elastic! I wanted to go for a brighter colour but my local haberdashery only had round elastic in a few colours and this green matches the walls of my living room perfectly. The elastic is around 4 mm thick and I used just under 3 meters.

To make this storage box you need:

  • Wooden storage crate with slats, mine is a Knagglig one from Ikea
  • Drill with 5mm wood drill piece
  • Sand paper
  • Round elastic round 4mm thick, 3 meters
  • Cute dog optional!

I'm using the crate to store all of my dogs toys, it's perfect as he can just poke his snout through the elastic or go over it and pick out his favourite toy. You can of course use the crate to store your child's toys, clothes, linens etc etc.

The crates also look great all stacked up, you can make a whole wall of them and everything in the boxes is still easy to grab through the elastic!

Did you watch the video till the end? Kermit is such a good retriever! :D He loves the new toy box and couldn't stop sniffling it but it took quite a lot of takes till he finally took something out! Think he's better in posing :)

Remember to use the hashtag #myhestershandmadehome for any projects you make from my website or books so I can share them on social media and in my newsletter. I love seeing your makes!

I'll be back next week with a new tutorial and it will be from the nursery (or little room as I like to call it) I'm working on. Hope to see you then! xx Hester
