No budget Gallery Wall Makeover

No budget Gallery Wall Makeover

Our hallway remained on touched since the 70’s, since we moved in I have updated several rooms but the hallway still looked the same since the previous owner last decorated in the 70’s. To make the wall facing the living room look a bit more fun I hung up some of Kiki’s art work last year but the shiny, wood grain print wallpaper started to peel and really annoy me so one weekend I thought enough is enough and we gave the wall a makeover. A no budget makeover as I only wanted to use materials I already had lying around the house. That means paint that was left over from previous projects, upcycled art frames and removing wallpaper with a sponge and water. Have a look and see how we got on.

I love how the scalloped edge works like its own large art frame to focus your attention to the art works on the wall. And see how easy it is to make your own photo/art frames? Have a good look around your house for materials you can use before you go out and buy frames. I know you can purchase a cheap photo frame but just a few pounds but isn’t it way more fun to make your own? And better for the environment as you reuse materials otherwise destined for the bin.

The scalloped edge was super easy to paint with the template made from a piece of scrap cardboard and a plate. Once you have traced the template all around the edges of your wall you fill in the shapes with your paint. I used a leftover bit of Tobacconist from Coat, the paint I used in the master bedroom. The colour goes well with the avocado green carpet and ties in with other areas in the house.

Which art frame is your favourite? I think mine has to be the koala hand puppet stand made from an old rattan tray, or the circular frame Kiki made from XL iron beads (the beads are from Sostrene Grene) Talking about iron beads the two birds that sit on the art hanger made from an old lamp stand are once we made a while ago from a template I found on Pinterest. They look great perched on the piece of wood!

I hope this project will inspire to update areas in your house on a no or low budget. When you have a rummage around your home you can find some many items you can reuse or turn into something else!
