I always say for my next garden I want a big outdoor table, you know one of those you always see in interior magazines. Large enough to sit your whole family, beautifully set for lunch and long evenings in the summer sun. Unfortunately I have a small garden so this has always been an outdoor dream.

Now we are spending a lot more time at home with the Corona lockdown I thought why wait, let’s just do some creative thinking and build a table that will work on my small deck. And while I’m at it I just give the whole deck a makeover!

Have a look at the video below to see how I build the table, with a little help from my little assistant Kiki.

I’ve been oohing and aahing for ages if I would make a rectangular table or a round one. I thought a round one would be great as having no corners is a lot more toddler friendly as Kiki plays on the deck a lot but was slightly worried it would look to big. A rectangular table would work well in the space but might be a bit boring and also has corners you can bump into. So I made a mix up and now have a rectangular table with one curved edge!!

Building your own furniture really makes it so you can adapt a piece to fit your needs.

As you can see in the video I didn’t really know how I was going to build the table but I knew I only wanted to use timber I already had in my shed. The only planks left were pallet wood ones, slightly thinner wood then I would have chosen in the timber yard but it works perfectly. I used 6 planks of 9.5 cm wide and 130 cm long.

Pallet wood cut in half length wise make 3 pieces that hold the table together under the table top, wood glue does the rest of the job.

The table is very easy to build as I only had to make the table top. The legs were kindly gifted by the Hairpinleg Company. They are made from zinc so are weatherproof, meaning I can keep the table out all year round. I went for the 3 rod 71 cm tall legs that you simply screw underneath your table top.

I’m loving the pale pink colour off the table and the bench. I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in the colour Antoinette on both but for the table I diluted the paint with a bit of water and sanded the table after painting to give it a slightly distressed look. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is great to use on outdoor projects too, just make sure you seal it with two layers of Annie Sloan lacquer to make it weather proof. (The paint was kindly gifted by Annie Sloan to use on my deck makeover projects)

Like I said in the video this is the first instalment of my deck makeover, next up is the magnolia wall you see behind us. I really don’t like its light yellow/beige colour and can’t wait to give it a lick of paint and a splash of fun. I was going to do that this week but the weather forecast isn’t great so might have to wait till next week. I do hope the lovely weather comes back but that said Kiki and I love being outside and as long as its not heavy rain you can find us on our little deck :)
